In the 2016 presidential elections, social media played a crucial role in enabling candidates to target their audiences ( Kreiss & McGregor, 2017). The affordances of social media enable rapid response, cultivating communities of supporters and pushing their agenda onto the national stage ( Kreiss, 2012 Stromer-Galley, 2014). Presidential political campaigns now routinely and actively use digital media to reach, engage, and mobilize voters ( Bimber & Davis, 2003 Foot & Schneider, 2006 Kreiss, 2012 Stromer-Galley, 2014).
